Lawsuit Over God Bless America Settled

A court has ruled in favor of a fan that sued the City of New York and the New York Yankees for his removal from a baseball game for going to the bathroom during the singing of God Bless America. In the suit, baseball fan Bradford Campeau-Laurion claimed he was removed from the stadium by a police officer during the playing of the song. Yankee_Stadium As a result of the action, he filed a lawsuit claiming he was a victim of political and religious discrimination and that his rights were violated during the games last August. Laurion was awarded $10,001 by the courts while $12,000 was awarded to the New York Civil Liberties Union for legal fees. The song, which was written by Irving Berlin in 1918, has remained a fixture at Yankee games since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, although many stadiums have since ceased playing the song. Ultimately, the Yankees said their stance has always been that fans are free to move around during the playing of the song without penalty.
